No Rainbows

It was a sunny day in arcadia, but, there had not been a rainbow for a very long time, there had been rain and sun, and the sun had been low enough but high enough, all at the same time but there still had not been a rainbow.

(You can’t see the sun because it is midday.)

The rainbow horse elders where worried and thought it had been too long since the last rainbow, over a year in fact, and there where new foals that wanted to see a rainbow so the rainbow horses called a meeting, Oak said, “There has never been such a long period between two rainbows, but there might be a simple explanation, maybe the sun has always been out of the “rainbow zone” and has been out by such a small amount that we did not notice it.”, every one shook their heads, Sunflower said, ”No, if it was out by such a small amount that we could not notice that it was it would not be out enough to matter.”, “It was just an idea.” whispered oak. Sky comforted Oak by saying, “It’s ok Oak, I am sure Sunflower did not mean to upset you, she was just saying that it was highly improbable.” Violet said, “Do you think it might be dark powers?”, “VIOLET! What have I told you about worrying everyone?” said Daisy, standing up on her hind legs. “I know that you have told all of us not to worry anyone but has anyone else noticed that the colours aren’t as bright as they where and it is affecting us and other rainbow horses the most?” asked Night. “I think we all have noticed.” said Rose. “Well,” Said Fire, “The only way we are going to find out what happened is to ask someone to make it rain at just the right time.”, there was an unanimous yes from everyone else. “You are right Fire, there is no point in bickering over it, we can’t do any harm by trying.”Said Daisy, “I think I might go and ask Goldy.”

(Black horses have the least power and can only do shadows, purple horses can only do shadows and purple, blue horses can only do shadows, purple, and blue, et cetera et cetera, white horses have the most power and can do all the colours and white, but some of them can’t do shadows and all horses are best at the colour that their bodies are.) (Night is the black horse, Violet is the purple horse, Sky is the blue horse, Oak is the green horse, Sunflower is the yellow horse, Fire is the orange horse, Rose is the red horse, and Daisy is, guess who? That’s right, the white horse.)

Daisy goes to find Goldy, a golden sea pegercorn, and asks her if she would make it rain at the right time without covering the sun so that a rainbow could form, Goldy says “Sure, I will do that; there has not been much rain recently so a bit of rain would be good. I can’t sense when I should do it unlike you though, so how am I going to know when to make it rain?” “I will say when you should do it, but only make it light rain ok?” said Daisy, “Ok, cool.” said Goldy.

At 4:30 Daisy said to Goldy “right make it rain… (30 second pause.)…NOW!”

And it rained, not much more than a drizzle but it was enough to make the sky fill with a bright rainbow! And, the colours in arcadia seemed to suddenly become much brighter too!

“Thank you Goldy, I could not have done this without you.”Says Daisy, ”You could, you could have asked someone else who can control the weather.)said Goldy, “No, there is no one like you Goldy, you are my friend.”Daisy said.

Eclipse of the Moon

Last night was exciting, I got to stay up to watch the eclipse of the moon that was due. It was really cloudy for most of the evening but it cleared enough for us to see the eclipse.

AnnMarie was busy with her camera, taking moon pictures, so I decided to have a go too. I fetched the lightest tripod and my Canon compact digital camera. I had to try out different settings but after a while I took some pictures which AnnMarie has now processed for me.

There are 10 x 4 second pictures stacked together to make the picture above. To the left, there’s Saturn, the ringed planet and above the moon there’s Regulus. If you read Linda Chapman’s Stardust Fairy books, you’ll know just how special Regulus is.

We have a few years to wait until the next eclipse; wow that was exciting.
